Bill’s Blog: Study shows community colleges can lead to a baccalaureate degree
I read a recent article which suggests that students who decide to earn a bachelor’s degree have more advantages after graduation than students who obtain an associate’s degree. That’s why it’s important to realize there are a number of education options offered at Utah’s colleges and universities. In keeping up with the demands of the future, 66% of Utah’s workforce will require a post-secondary degree or certificate by the year 2020. Having skilled employees is essential for the state to achieve the economic growth necessary to sustain the current living standard.
This article in U.S. News and World Report suggests that “Many students who begin their higher education experiences in community colleges plan to later transfer to four-year schools in order to earn their bachelor’s degrees.” Did you ever stop to think there is more to “going to college” than just a four-year institution? Finishing high school and attending to a four-year university might fit some students, but other students might look toward two-year or certificate programs. Students should not just “go to college,” students should also “finish college” and this article also reveals that many who plan to complete an associate’s degree program at a community college find they have the motivation to earn a baccalaureate degree.
Fortunately, the Utah System of Higher Education has education options for everyone including community college programs—many of which contain a full range of general education which often leads directly to a bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, data suggests that post-secondary students in Utah transfer institutions 1.8 times, so the state’s colleges and universities make it easy to transfer to another institution within the system.
