College enrollments keep climbing, but will degrees follow?
(Brian Maffly, Salt Lake Tribune) – Utah’s public college enrollments again took a big step up this fall, climbing by 8,156 students. Half that growth was concentrated at a single school, Utah Valley University, only two years after its shift to university status with a rapidly expanding menu of four-year offerings.
UVU enrollment grew by almost 14 percent, giving the Orem campus, which now offers 58 bachelor’s programs, as large a student body as the state’s flagship school, the University of Utah.
The number of students now attending classes at the state’s eight public institutions climbed to 173,000 for a 5 percent gain, according to data released Wednesday by the Board of Regents. Adjusted to reflect the number of students enrolled for a full load of courses, the gain was even steeper at 6.2 percent, indicating that students are taking larger course loads.
