Commissioner Accepts Governor’s challenge to help Utah’s military

Utah’s colleges and universities join employment project to aid Veterans

SALT LAKE CITY – In an effort to aid Utah’s veterans in gaining skills and credentials for employment, the Utah System of Higher Education has joined forces with other state agencies by accepting a challenge presented by Governor Gary Herbert. In a press conference earlier today, Governor Herbert announced the Military to Civilian Crosswalk for Accelerated Employment Opportunities Project to help veterans gain employment in the civilian job market.

This project hopes to align veterans’ Military Occupational Specialties with training and future employment goals. As part of the challenge, the Commissioner has urged each of Utah’s public colleges and universities to have a point person to assist veterans in working with faculty and departments. This will allow institutions to match veterans’ previous experiences, training and knowledge with learning outcomes and course equivalents. “The 66% goal is crucial,” said Commissioner Sederburg, “and our institutions are committed to helping veterans complete a post secondary degree or certificate.” By the year 2020, Utah needs 66% of its workforce with some form of post secondary credential in order to align with future employment needs.

Other agencies involved with this project include Department of Workforce Services, the Utah National Guard and the US Department of Labor Veterans Program.
