It’s a FAFSA, not an AFSA
Applying for federal financial aid is free. However, there are several websites out there that will try and charge you a fee to fill out the FAFSA. Don’t let them fool you into paying money for an application that is free to the public. After all, FAFSA stands for FREE Application for Federal Student Aid. If a website is charging fees to fill out a free application, you can just imagine what they might do with your personal information, so be careful.
You should always apply for federal financial aid directly from the U.S. Department of Education’s website, www.fafsa.ed.gov. So, if the website you happen to be using to fill out the FAFSA doesn’t have a “.gov” domain extension at the end of its web address, it’s likely that you’re in the wrong place. For a tutorial with more in-depth guidance on the FAFSA, click on “Navigating the FAFSA “.
