New FERPA Rule Clarifies How Data Can be Used in State Longitudinal Data Systems
The U.S. Department of Education recently released clarification on how data can be used in state longitudinal data systems and remain compliant with FERPA. This new rule clarifies that states can balance effective data use with protection of student information. In a prepared statement the Data Quality Campaign said:
In December 2011, ED released final regulations making these long-awaited clarifications and transforming the FERPA issue, as it relates to education reform efforts, from whether student data may be used for important educational purposes to how student data may be used for these purposes.
