What is the purpose of college? Why do so many people–professors, deans, provosts, and other faculty–desire to claim their career at a college? What makes students fork out big dollars for four years? Why college? The reasons vary, but I certainly hope that you have a lot more things on your mind than just football as you make your way in the university atmosphere.
Throughout your life, creating and maintaining positive relationships will be a huge key to your success. And I don’t mean this in the sense that finding a sugar daddy/momma to support you financially is the only way to be successful (…though I’m not entirely ruling it out either). Instead, I simply mean that building bridges between yourself and a variety of people from all walks of life is going to make your life a lot easier.
Last week, we declared war on an underlying commonality of students (and, quite frankly, a commonality that exists among us humans). It’s a horrible thing. It runs a mock in our lives. It’s not a lack of money, but procrastination. The oh-so-dangerous-and-easy-to-get-ensnared-in procrastination. Please, if you haven’t, read my last post about procrastination (you will enjoy it, I am sure!). Today, the war rages on and I have a few more tricks up my sleeve, some good advice to win the battle.

From my high school days I remember a lot of friends bragging about how they could pass any class without studying. These are usually the kids who more or less breezed through high school, taking only the classes that were required and not bothering attempting the more challenging pre-college courses. I have to give them credit: they did manage to get by with A’s and B’s with a minimal effort. They walked on graduation day like everyone else.
One of the most common issues circulating around the higher education sphere today is obvious: college is expensive! (And hey, that’s why an entire section of the HigherEdUtah site is dedicated to preparing and paying for college.) Today, the reality is that a great deal of the students pursuing, entering and currently attending college will need to seek out a job at some point to help cover the costs of a higher education. Now, I know working may not be number one on your list of activities to engage in after a hard day of classes, but take a look at it this way. On-the-job experience is your chance to make connections, build and acquire skills and get ahead of the competition.
One of the many armaments of a great college student is a task list, a list that has everything you need to do for the day, week, month, and even year. I have to have a daily organizer for a successful day and for a successful year at school. Luckily, an iPhone app aids me in my high-achieving hopes. So, I proudly wave my iPhone above my head as a banner and as a symbol of efficacy. Will you join me? Will you join me in declaring war on procrastination?
As fun as it is, college can be a very stressful experience, especially for students entering their freshman year. With a million new options for fun, entertainment, learning, and much more loose class schedules, many students end up cramming at the last minute and/or pulling all-nighters for major assignments. Fortunately though, there are many ways to keep ahead of the game and keep your stress level at a minimum.
