Editorials: Protect higher ed
The Salt Lake Tribune has published a second editorial in just over a week advocating protection against deeper cuts to higher education:
- “For higher education, the cuts being proposed by some legislators are even deeper and could have serious long-term “
The Salt Lake Tribune aptly outlines the ultimate loser of such cuts – students:
- “Class offerings would be reduced, requiring students to put off graduation in order to get the classes they need.”
These potential budget cuts will become an access issue for students – at a time when a record number of new students are entering college. It is well-known that anything less than some postsecondary training makes it very difficult for an individual to earn a living wage.
Read the editorial “Future on the Line” from January 15, 2010.
The Deseret News also advocated protection from further cuts in Sunday’s editorial:
- “Higher education is facing hundreds of layoffs due to cuts. A state that values education can’t continue to make that claim with a straight face if this continues, even in a down economy.”
