Tuition Increases Approved for 2010-11
EPHRAIM, UTAH – The State Board of Regents approved new tuition rates for the 2010-2011 academic year at a meeting today held at Snow College. System-wide, the average total tuition increase is 8% or $294 in annual tuition for 15 credit hours for two semesters (for an undergraduate Utah resident). The attached table shows the annual tuition increases by each institution based on the basic rate for full-time undergraduate students who are Utah residents.
These increases are necessary to preserve the quality of education at our institutions. Higher Education remains the best investment anyone can make in themselves and their potential, observed Jed Pitcher, Chair of the State Board of Regents.
Tuition is approved in two tiers. The first tier is a system-wide increase of 1.5% to assist institutions in covering additional employee health and retirement costs not funded by the state. The second tier is proposed by each institution separately through Boards of Trustees for institutional priorities and approved by the Board of Regents.
Commissioner of Higher Education Bill Sederburg noted that while the increases somewhat mitigate state budget cuts, they do not entirely replace state dollars that have been cut. Tuition increases would have been much higher had the Legislature and the Governor not agreed to restore $33 million in higher education budgets.
