(Brian Maffly, Salt Lake Tribune) — Utah girls in grades 6 through 12 are invited to explore careers in math, science and technology careers Saturday at the “Expanding Your Horizons” conference at Utah Valley University.

“Research has shown that many girls start dropping out of STEM classes (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in junior high. However, these are the very classes that girls need to take to be successful in college and competitive in our global market,” said Jennie Briggs, director of UVU’s Equity in Education Center.

“By introducing a wide variety of STEM careers and professional women role models, the Expanding Your Horizons conference provides girls with the encouragement and tools they need to continue in STEM classes and to pursue non-traditional careers for women.”

The conference will have 45 workshops in technical areas, such as aviation, biotech, environmental science, medicine, forensic science and paleontology.
